Description

Long Distance Voyager is the 10th album by The Moody Blues, first released in May 1981 on the group''s Threshold record label. It was the group''s first album featuring keyboardist Patrick Moraz (who previously had worked with bands such as Refugee and Yes) in place of co-founder Mike Pinder, who left after Octave in 1978. Upon release in 1981, Long Distance Voyager became the Moody Blues'' second American number one album and was also the source of the Top 20 singles "Gemini Dream" and "The Voice"

Excellent album. The Moodies would not produce another album of this quality - I consider it the last of their "golden" period. After the hiccup of Octave, they returned in full force with this album.

I have my favourites, but really there isn''t a bad song on the album. There isn''t much I need to add here to the mountain of other reviews, except to praise the outstanding contribution of Ray Thomas, who supplied the 3-part suite that closes the album. On many earlier Moody Blues albums i have felt that his compositions were the weak link; a little too cute and twee, as if intended for an early afternoon kiddies'' TV show. These three songs however (well, two songs and one recitation) show a maturity as well as a freshness of approach for the band.

Songs such as The Voice, in My World, and Meanwhile have the old Moody Blues magic, a magic that I don''t think they ever really managed to recapture on any later releases.

By the end of the 1970''s the Moody Blues were largely seen as a band running out of steam. this release in 1981 changed that spawning 2 top 20 singles and becoming a Number 1 album in it''s own right. The album introduced the band to the MTV generation and gave long time fans a treasure as well. This remastered reissue includes a bonus track of the single edit of The Voice in my opinion one of their all time best singles. Other stand out tracks include Gemini Dream, In my World, and Talking out of Turn. Sonically a luxurious recording and excellent Liner notes round out the Release. Definitely a must have.

When I was a teenager if I heard a good song on the radio I taped it. I have a couple hundred of those tapes. No, they''re not good to listen to but I kept a list of those songs in my old notebook. Once in a while, I''ll read it and uncover a Forgotten Gem. It had been 30 years since I heard it, or even thought about it, but when I saw "TALKING OUT OF TURN" listed there it just jumped off the page. Wow, I had totally forgotten it existed. Well, I had to have it and it sounds even BETTER TODAY than it did 30 YEARS AGO. It''s the BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM which includes THE VOICE, GEMINI DREAM and some other good ones. For me, TALKING OUT OF TURN goes right alongside NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN and THE OTHER SIDE OF LIFE. It''s a Far Better song than good old TUESDAY AFTERNOON and YOUR WILDEST DREAMS. Rediscovering TALKING was like running into an old childhood friend. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

The Moodies'' 9th album, "Long Distance Voyager" is a pleasant surprise, especially if you''re a casual Moody Blues fan who''s only familiar with the group''s best known work, their original "Core 7" albums of which their fame is based. (Those 7, in order, by the way are: "Days of Future Passed", "In Search of the Lost Chord", ""On the Threshold of a Dream", "To Our Children''s Children''s Children", "A Question of Balance", "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour", & "Seventh Sojourn" - all produced between the years of 1967 and 1972.)

"LDV" was produced in 1981, four years after album #8, the aptly-named, "Octave" was released. "Octave" was the last album featuring the original band members of Justin Hayward, John Lodge, Graeme Edge, Ray Thomas, and Mike Pinder. Keyboardist Pinder left the band for good after "Octave" and was replaced by former keyboard player for "Yes", Patrick Moraz. Moraz does a fine job stepping in for Pinder on "LDV" and does all of the keyboard work. The other four members of the group play their usual great job on this CD and do all of the song writing.

Hayward, author of the two best known and most popular cuts on the CD, "The Voice" and "Gemini Dream" (co-authored with Lodge) is in fine voice and form on the lead guitar. He also penned the a couple of the lesser known cuts on the album, the mostly acoustic, "In My World" and the soft-rocking "Meanwhile". Lodge, by the way, wrote the 3rd most commercially successful cut on the CD, the haunting "Talking Out of Turn", which did chart in the U.S. and the musically diverse "Nervous". Edge, as he had done on many of the earlier albums, contributed only one cut, but it was the catchy, "22,000 Days", a reference to the average number of days that a human being has in his or her lifespan. Edge''s message, of course, is to make those most of those 22,000 days. Thomas, as he''s done in most of the earlier albums provides a poem of sorts in "Reflective Smile" and the other two songs which make up a trilogy of sorts, "Painted Smile" and "Veteran Cosmic Rocker". As with many of Thomas'' works, fans will either love what he''s done or walk away scratching their heads.

"Long Distance Voyager" is a link to those "Core 7" albums and will find fancy with dedicated droves of MB fans. The casual fan, who might be tempted to stick to the more familiar Core 7, won''t want to miss out on this terrific collection of songs and musical performances.

With this album the Moody Blues were definitely back in the limelight after the previous poor album OCTAVE, which was pretty mediocre compared to the classic SEVEN. I was in 10th grade when I started hearing "The Voice", and "Gemini Dream", plus, a few of the other tracks that start off the album. Until I heard "The Voice", I didn''t even know there was a group called the Moody Blues, but this definitely got me on the bandwagon for sure. "Meanwhile" is also a very beautiful track that I never tire of hearing. I do like "Talking Out of Turn", but I think that it goes on a little long at over 7:00 minutes. And unlike some of your other reviewers, I do really like "22,000 Days". I am starting to even like the last four tracks also, but they aren''t in the league of the first six tracks. In about 1985 I started delving into their earlier albums and especially the first three that they put out with the classic lineup, with my favorite being ON THE THRESHOLD OF A DREAM. Don''t hesitate in buying this classic LDV, because I think it sells used for about $4.00 or something like that. THE PRESENT is little better than LDV because all the songs are winners on it.

P.S.- The original recording of LDV was pretty poor and thin sounding. I wouldn''t buy the first issue on cd, but maybe, aquire the 2008 remaster. It''s just barely better than the 1997 remasters. The SHM-Cd version is very flat sounding so I would say avoid it. It''s very expensive anyway. The following album THE PRESENT was a fine sounding issue right from the beginning so I''d just buy it in the first issue. Good day!!!

The Moody Blues made a powerful and startling return to life on this chart-topping album that featured 2 hit singles. The best song, "Meanwhile" was not even released as a single. The album is so intricately layered with sounds and powerful vocals that it rivals some of the progressive albums of groups like Genesis, even before Genesis went pop themselves. It is really pure artistry when you can create an album of this quality that sounds this good and be this commercial besides. I can feel the Moodies may be about to do this again. They never rush things. They don''t have to. I can feel it all begin............

This album oozes with talent from all the band members. Justin, John, Ray and Graeme are all well represented here. Justin has the single ''the voice'' that opens the album. It is a nice mid tempo song with subtle keyboards and acoustic guitars, but not a stand out. ''Talking out of turn'' is a John ballad that has an excellent melody and nice orchestral overdubs. His voice is a little weak to be a stand out track though. ''Gemini dream'' is the other single and is a collaboration between John and Justin. It is a fast paced keyboard orientated rocker. It is the only track where Moraz''s synthesiser work threatens to take over. On their 1986 album ''the other side of life'' this would have fit perfectly and been a stand out track. Here, it is mediocre. The album really picks up after this and the rest of the songs are pure genius. ''In my world'' is an instantly likeable Justin ballad. It is a really romantic soft song, awash with loads of acoustic guitars and a beautiful melody. An instant stand out. ''Meanwhile'' is Justin''s other contribution, which is a mid tempo folk ballad. It is also beautiful with nice lower vocal meldodies and a catchy chorus. Graeme contributes ''22,000 days''. It is an unorthodox but brilliant song. It has a nice riff going and John''s lead vocals are better suited here. The chorus is sung by Justin, John and Ray, with some really nice harmonica passages from Ray. ''Nervous'' is a stand out John ballad. It is beautifully soft at the start, with some nice flute work from Ray. It almost becomes anthem like in the chorus part and the play out instrumental section is spectacular. Ray is well represented on the last three tracks. ''Painted smile'' is a familiar theme for Ray. It seems like a happy go lucky buncy song, much in the vain of ''Carousel'' from his solo album. However, if one looks at the lyrics, it is a really deep song. Fantastic music and an interesting arrangement, away from the acoustic rhythm, bass, drums approach. ''Reflective smile'' is a 30 secnd spoken passage, leading into what is possibly the best track on the album ''Veteran cosmic rocker''. An amazing melody, brilliant strong baritone vocals from Ray, and excellent eastern and rovky instrumental passages. This track most harks back to older Moody blues, with subtle sitars used, which can be heard right at the end of the album. A fantastic album, which really shows the band had not lost the talent from the crucial first seven albums.

The Moody Blues released Long Distance Voyager in May 1981 to earn a second platinum disk. Showcasing guitars, drums, and keyboards as never before, the album ultimately charted at #1 in the US and #7 in the UK. While the effort marked the departure of long-time producer Tony Clarke, it hailed the initial studio appearance of Patrick Moraz, the session keyboardist who filled the void as Mike Pinder stepped out of the limelight to settle in Malibu. So long Mellotron, hello synthesizers. In the midst of personnel changes, the Moody Blues were invigorated with a new lease on life and ready for the 80s. The craftsmanship for this band consistently hits the high mark. What''s not to love? Several tracks run between 5 and 7 minutes and, 32 years later, persist on concert set lists. The Voice and Gemini Dream set the audience swaying then on to its feet. The acoustic guitar on In My World still delights. Meanwhile is a confection of layers. The sitar that closes Veteran Cosmic Rocker speaks to the band''s maturity and evolution. Lovely piece of work altogether.
